Math Help for Section 3.1, Page 106

Example
6: Tip

Note that this example uses the same information as Example 7 on page
91. Refer to the Math
Help
for that page for additional information on
developing the equation.

Example
6: Check

    $\eqalign{865,000 &= 175\left(
{2500} \right) +
95x&{\small\color{red}\quad\quad\text{Write original
equation.}}  \cr 865,000 &\overset{?}{=} 175\left(
{2500}
\right) + 95\left( {\color{red}4500\color{black}}
\right)&{\small\color{red}\quad\quad\text{Substitute 4500
for }x.} \cr 865,000 &\overset{?}{=} 437,500 +
427,500&{\small\color{red}\quad\quad\text{Multiply.}}
\cr
865,000 &= 865,000
&{\small\color{red}\quad\quad\text{Solution

Note that each side of the equation represents a dollar
amount.

Tip

When solving a word problem, be sure to ask yourself whether your
solution makes sense. For instance, suppose the answer you obtain in
Example 6 is $-4500$ stadium seats sold. This answer does not make
sense
because the number of stadium seats sold cannot be negative.
